The second book starts a 12 months after the events of The Summer I Turned Pretty, with Belly daydreaming about being back in Cousins Beach with the Fishers. She snaps her out of it and realizes she's in reality in her homeland.

The three throw a massive party at the seaside space; Belly will get so inebriated that she calls her mom, Laurel, begging her to come to Cousins and forestall Adam from selling the space. Laurel arrives in the morning and scolds Belly for lying and consuming. Belly tells Laurel she needs Susannah have been her mom and says Susannah would be ashamed of her for now not saving the house. Laurel slaps Belly; she apologizes later on and concurs to talk with Adam.

They get into a combat, and Conrad tells Belly she belongs together with his brother. He then claims he doesn't need her; he never did. Conrad later retracts the statement, but nothing adjustments between him and Belly.
