Few comedians have established reputations as funnier and more thoughtful people than Jerrod Carmichael. From The Carmichael Show to his endeavors as a standup comedian, he has confirmed himself to be each flexible and humorous, and he has persevered to amplify the boundaries of what he is capable of as a performer.

As Jerrod becomes increasingly widely known, though, some have puzzled who his parents are. Jerrod has talked overtly about his parents, and specifically about coming out to them, at more than a few issues all the way through his career. Here's what we learn about who they are, and what Jerrod has mentioned about their dating.

Jerrod Carmichael was once born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Joe and Cynthia Carmichael. Joe is reportedly a truck driver, however not a lot else is known about who his parents are.

Jerrod has been open about the fact that he grew up in a deficient circle of relatives, that does not offer a ton of insight into who his parents had been. While he hasn't given their bios, although, Jerrod has presented numerous remark on how his sexuality has affected his courting with them.

"Me and my mom have a God-sized wall between us. You know, that's the impossible thing to navigate," he defined all through a Howard Stern interview in 2022. "I'm trying to trust fall into a new interpretation of religion because I do think it has value.

Jerrod explained by that Christianity eventually became a source of "self-hate" for him, and that it ultimately kept him in the closet longer.

"Like, I haven't totally let pass of it and I'm seeking to reinterpret it for me and I've been looking to get my mom to have some type of openness to her interpretation of it and it is exhausting," he continued. "It's a difficult thing as a result of people — my mom, no longer just people. My mom holds onto faith because it were given her thru in reality tough occasions."

Jerrod has had to distance himself somewhat from his mother.

Jerrod explained that, because his mother was conflicted about his sexuality, he ultimately felt like he needed to build some space between them.

"She didn't account for a gay son. She does not truly know what to do with it," he said. "I can really feel her being misplaced. I wish to work with her however chatting with her and now not acknowledging that a part of myself reasons a reverberating impact of self-hate that I will be able to't afford at the moment. So, I added distance. I believe it will be significant."

Jerrod said that while it has been hard with his mother, his father has been supportive, and even served as a sort of "referee" between him and his mother.

"'Your mother referred to as the opposite day, so take some time to call her. She loves you and misses her baby boy,'" Jerrod recalled his father telling him. "What I wrote back used to be, 'I do know. I love her too, however her child boy is now a big gay guy and I believe we'd like some time to come back to terms with that.' And that is the place we are."
